    1. L. Leslie Brooke Is a well-known author, some of his books are a fascination for readers like in the Johnny Crow's Garden A Picture Book book, this is one of the most wanted L. Leslie Brooke author readers around the world.

    2. First published in 1903, this simple rhyming book for very young readers tells what happens when Johnny Crow's friends visit his garden. I liked how Johnny was always around to make sure his friends had a good time, whether he helped the apes make a coat for the bear or turned everyone loose after that sly fox put them all in the stocks. The illustrations are adorable, and some on the Gutenberg edition are in color. My favorite showed the animal audience trying to stay awake while the whale tell [...]

    3. What a bird is Johnny Crow! He has an amazing garden and it is shown to great advantage in this picture book, with words, of course, by Leslie Brooke. The animals to be found in the garden are countless beginning with a cute lion with a green and yellow bow tie. The rat wore a feather in his hat but unfortunately the bear had nothing to wear so the ape took his measure with a tape, preparing to fit him out!The crane was caught in the rain so Johnny produced an umbrella to protect him but the beav [...]

    4. This is a bizarre little rhyming picture book which I recall being very fond of as a young child. The thrill of being able to read the thing far outweighed its ludicrousness and somewhat sinister illustrations. I had forgotten all about it until I chanced upon a pocket sized reprint recently. Maybe pocket size works better as one is less likely to scrutinise the drawings closely. I think what was most disturbing was that although all the animals in the story are highly anthropomorphised and dres [...]

    5. This was another childhood favorite. I loved the illustrations so much my mother painted a hand drawn "ane, caught out in the rain, in Johnny Crow's Garden", which I still have.

    6. This young children's picture book of 1903 was strongly recommended as a classic fifty years later by Annis Duff and I can see why. The illustrations are superb, with all sorts of delightful small touches that advance the story (limited as it is). Look at this sequence:and the Whaletold a very long Talein Johnny Crow's GardenYou can see the Whale beginning its story to an eager audience then the animals start getting sleepy - the lion yawns, the elephant snuggles up and then all of them sneak aw [...]

    7. This short poem (with lovely illustrations by the author) is great fun and was one of my favourites as a child. I still enjoy the bizarreness of the verse, and the pictures capture the character of the animals as they all meet in Johnny Crow's (who is a crow) garden for a party. Would be a nice way to introduce a class to nonsense verse, with loads of opportunity for creativity, asking pupils to make a similar poem with the animals they might invite to their own garden party.

    8. Having read about L. Leslie Brooke in textbooks about children's literature, I was glad to find this title. The black and white illustrations won't be engaging for most contemporary kids, but people who are interested in the history of literature will enjoy it.

    9. One of the earliest books around, that I recall, of animals taking on human qualities. The story is delightful, the illustrations have the same emotive quality as Beatrix Potter's work, and the story line is simple, fun and memorable!

    11. A childhood favorite. My edition was a double book, with Peter Pan (an abridged version) upside down and starting from the backm or the front as it were. This part is much more worn.

    12. My all-time favorite book when I was a lad living in central Maine. The illustrations and text blended very well, a delightful story - one which I savor at least seventy-five years later.

    13. This is an excellent story for young readers. There are a few large words, but overall the text is age appropriate. The illustrations are also very nice.
